Who it's for
Aurabyte is designed for school-age learners and anyone starting out with code. Lessons are short and written in plain English, and every language has Beginner, Intermediate and Pro levels, so learners can start where they're comfortable and keep growing.
Languages, lessons and challenges
| Language | Lessons | Challenges | Examples of topics |
|---|---|---|---|
| Python | 12 | 18 | print, variables, if / else, loops, functions, lists, dictionaries, error handling, classes |
| JavaScript | 12 | 19 | console.log, let and const, loops, functions, map, filter, reduce, template literals |
| HTML | 12 | 12 | headings, links, lists, page structure, accessible images, forms, tables, navigation |
| CSS | 12 | 12 | colours, the box model, flexbox, grid, media queries, variables, transitions |
| Java | 12 | 9 | printing, types, loops, methods, arrays, ArrayList, String methods, classes |
| C++ | 12 | 9 | cout and cin, types, loops, functions, vectors, references, strings, structs |
Each lesson has a short explanation, a working example and, where one exists, a "Try it" button that opens a matching challenge. Challenges give instant feedback and hints. JavaScript answers are really run in the browser; answers in the other languages are checked against expected solutions.
Code lab
A space to write and run your own programs. Python and JavaScript run inside the browser, web pages (HTML, CSS and JavaScript) show a live preview, and Java and C++ run through a shared service with a daily limit. Code saves automatically and can be downloaded.
Motivation without the pressure
Learners earn "aura" for solving challenges, move up ranks from Spark to Legendary, and unlock badges. A friendly mascot called Byte reacts to answers and gives encouragement. There are no leaderboards comparing learners with each other.
Free accounts
An account is optional. With one, progress is saved across devices, and members can choose Byte styles, download certificates with their name when they complete a level, and save up to 20 named projects in the Code lab.
Accessibility
Aurabyte works with a keyboard and screen readers, has larger-text and high-contrast options, respects reduced-motion settings, and is designed for phones as well as computers. It can be installed as an app and most of it works offline.
Coming soon
Features being tested include classes for teachers (class codes, assignments and progress tracking), a read-only family view for parents, missions with understanding checks, a skills map and an in-site help assistant.
Privacy and safety
Aurabyte is free and has no adverts. There is no chat between users. People can delete their account and data at any time. Full details are on the privacy page.
